In 2025, UPI frauds in India crossed ₹1,087 crore — and the average victim lost ₹14,000 per incident. The terrifying part? Most victims are educated, tech-savvy Indians who thought it could never happen to them. Here are the 5 most active UPI scams in 2026 and exactly how to avoid them.
Scam 1: The 'Collect Request' trap
This is the most common UPI fraud today. A scammer calls you pretending to be a buyer on OLX or Quikr. They say they will 'send' you money and share a UPI collect request.
Here is the trick: a collect request asks YOU to enter your PIN to authorize — it does not receive money, it sends it. Victims who enter their PIN thinking they are accepting payment end up sending money instead.
Rule: You never need to enter your UPI PIN to receive money. If someone asks you to, disconnect immediately.
Scam 2: Fake QR codes at shops and petrol pumps
Fraudsters replace legitimate QR codes at small shops, dhabas, and petrol stations with their own. When you scan and pay, your money goes to the scammer — not the shop owner. This scam has been reported across Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru extensively.
Prevention: before scanning any QR code, verbally confirm the merchant name that appears on your PhonePe or Google Pay screen. If the name does not match the business you are at, do not pay.
Scam 3: Impersonation of bank officials
You receive a call from someone claiming to be from SBI, HDFC, or your UPI app's support team. They say your account has suspicious activity and ask you to 'verify' your details. They may ask for your OTP, UPI PIN, or to download AnyDesk or TeamViewer for 'remote verification.' No legitimate bank or UPI app will ever call you and ask for your PIN or OTP.
These are the two things that must never be shared under any circumstances — not even with family.
Scam 4: Fake lottery and cashback messages
'Congratulations! You have won ₹50,000 in the Jio or Paytm lucky draw. Pay ₹199 processing fee via UPI to claim your prize.' This scam remains devastatingly effective in 2026 because the messages are increasingly professional with fake logos and branding.
The moment any 'reward' requires you to make a payment first, it is a scam. Legitimate company offers never charge processing fees via UPI to retail customers.
Scam 5: Impersonation of a friend in distress
You get a WhatsApp message from an unknown number: 'Hi, this is Rahul. My phone broke, I am using a friend's number. I am stuck at the airport and need ₹3,000 urgently.' The message uses your friend's name and creates extreme urgency. Always verify by calling the actual person on their known number before any UPI transfer. This scam exploits social trust and is especially effective because it is personalized — scammers often research Facebook profiles first.
How to report a UPI fraud in India
If you are scammed, act within the first 30 minutes for the best chance of recovery. Call the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930. File a report at cybercrime.gov.in. Also call your bank's fraud helpline immediately to freeze the transaction. Screenshot all evidence before reporting. NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) has a dispute resolution mechanism, but quick action dramatically improves recovery chances.
💡 Share this with your parents and grandparents immediately. UPI scams disproportionately target older Indians who are newer to digital payments.
